The Force India team has been awarded US$4,683,000 in damages in a legal action against its former sponsors, Etihad Airways and Aldar Properties. The former is the national airline of Abu Dhabi, and the latter the company responsible for the development of the Yas Island track

Both owned by the Abu Dhabi government, the companies jointly sponsored the Spyker team in 2007 at the start of what was supposed to be a three-year deal.

However after Dr Vijay Mallya bought into the team and it became Force India the backing was switched to Scuderia Ferrari in January 2008.

Sitting in the London High Court this week Judge Gray made a ruling in favor of Force India on the basis of wrongful termination of the sponsorship agreement, including aspects based on points and championship position bonuses.

The matter was clearly complicated by a clash between Etihad and Kingfisher Airlines, but Mallya apparently had agreed not to promote his company via the team.
