BIG BLOCK, BIGGER BUCKS: Not long after a blue 1970 Chevelle SS LS6 big-block hammered at $180,000, a red 1970 Chevelle SS LS6 big-block hit the magic $200,000 mark. Final price with buyer’s premium was $220,000.

[Friday 10:54 pm ET]

BIG BLOCK, BIG BUCKS: To lovers of Chevelle SS models the engine code LS6 is magic. Rated at 450 horsepower in the 1970 Chevelle SS, the 454-cubic-inch LS6 was a brutally powerful engine. To find a correct 1970 Chevelle convertible like this one is sales magic. Not surprisingly, this car pulled $180,000 plus buyer’s premium late Friday.

[Friday 10:40 pm ET]

TAILGATE TRIUMPH: SPX, Galpin Auto Sports, Ford Motor Co. and Barrett-Jackson teamed to build the ultimate tailgating vehicle, a completely customized Ford F-150 King Ranch truck . This truck includes three televisions, a gaming system, BBQ, cooler and lots of other goodies. It sells to well-known philanthropist Ron Pratte for $100,000, with all proceeds going to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

[Friday 9:11 pm ET]

FOOSE FORD: Once again, another charity vehicle and lots of money raised for a good cause. This time it’s a 1953 Ford F-100 that celebrates the 60th anniversary of WD-40 multi-use product. All of the $170,000 raised from the sale will go to two SEMA Cares charities: Childhelp, an organization that provides services to abused and neglected children, and Victory Junction, which provides life changing camping experiences to special needs and chronically ill children. Austin Petty, grandson of Richard Petty, was on the stage for the sale. The younger Petty runs Victory Junction.

[Friday 7:38 pm ET]

HABITAT HELPER: As expected, the charity sale of a 1958 Corvette owned by General Motors Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson brings huge money, selling for $270,000 to Rick Hendrick. That ties it for the top seller of the sale so far. All the money goes to Habitat For Humanity, a pet cause of Akerson and his wife.

[Friday 7:16 pm ET]

TERLINGUA TWISTER: A tribute to the late, great Carroll Shelby, this 1968 Mustang
crosses the block at $100,000 plus 10 percent buyer’s fee. This is strong money for a car that basically is modeled after a more famous one.

[Friday 6:02 pm ET]

CUSTOM CRUSHER: Wow, didn’t see this one coming — $165,000 for a restomod 1970 Oldsmobile 442 convertible. This is a beauty, though, and a heavy custom build. The color combination — Huntington Beach Blue Pearl over high-end white leather interior — is stunning in every respect.

[Friday 5:43 pm ET]

ANOTHER GOOD CAUSE: The giving continues into the afternoon at Barrett-Jackson, as a one-of-a-kind 2013 Shelby GT500 sells for $150,000, with the money to benefit the Edith and Benson Ford Heart & Vascular Institute at Henry Ford Health System. The cool part? It was created by Ford designer Melvin Betancourt, a former patient at Henry Ford Hospital. The giving is huge at this auction and it’s going to pick up tonight and tomorrow.

[Friday 5:33 pm ET]

SNAKE BIT: Only seven orange Dodge Viper American Club Racers were produced in 2009 out of a total production run of 659 Vipers overall. This one moved to the top of the sales chart Friday at Barrett-Jackson when it sold for $123,200 with bidder’s premium. What a nice looking — and sinister looking — sports car.

[Friday 4:45 pm ET]

ALL THE MONEY: The first car to break the $100,000 barrier on Friday is this very cool custom 1958 Pontiac Star Chief, which sold for $121,000 with the buyer’s premium. This beautiful Pontiac has a modern LS1 Corvette engine.

Speaking of big numbers, Thursday sales at the 42nd Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event totaled $11.14 million, bringing the three-day total to $24.54 million, putting the event on track for a huge finish.

NOTICE: On January 17, 2013, the first day of the Barrett-Jackson Fantasy Bid Game – Scottsdale 2013 and the Barrett-Jackson Fantasy Bid Sweepstakes – Scottsdale 2013 (together referred to as the “Game”), technical problems with the computer system beyond the control of Sponsor resulted in an impairment to the proper play of the Game. As a result, pursuant to the Official Rules, the Sponsor suspended the registration and play of the Game following the initial Fantasy Bid Auction on that day to repair the system.

Registration for the Game is now open and Game play will resume during the Auction Times listed in the Official Rules, today, January 18, 2013. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused the players in the Game.

LONG HAUL: For the next 10 hours, enjoy the 42nd Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event live on SPEED and streamed live on SPEED.com. We’re on today and tomorrow from 2 p.m. to midnight ET both days. Already, the auction is off to a fantastic start and the big money cars are starting to roll into the auction tent today.

As always, charity cars will be big here at Barrett-Jackson. One of them crossing the block today will be a Regal Turquoise 1958 Chevrolet Corvette owned by General Motors Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson. All proceeds from the Corvette sale will go to Habitat For Humanity.

[Friday 1:09 pm ET]

FATHERS AND SONS: I first met Ray Evernham in 1997, when he was a crew chief at Hendrick Motorsports. At the time, he was leading Jeff Gordon to the second of three NASCAR Sprint Cup championships the two would win together. Back then, Evernham was known for two things: No one in NASCAR worked harder, and no one built race cars with more attention to detail than Evernham.

Evernham wears a variety of hats these days, and he’s at the 42nd Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Event as a philanthropist and concerned father. Evernham’s son, Ray J, has Asperger’s syndrome, a spectrum-related social disorder similar to autism. Evernham is the driving force behind IGNITE, a Davidson, N.C., community center dedicated to helping young adults with autism or Asperger’s.

To that end, Evernham has built the FOR-PLY, a 200-mile-per-hour, street-legal hot rod that combines a NASCAR chassis and motor with a 1964 Plymouth Belvedere body. We’ll have a full story on this amazing car tomorrow on SPEED.com, but suffice to say the attention to detail is as good on this car as it is on any NASCAR race car Evernham ever built.

All the money from the sale of the FOR-PLY will be donated to IGNITE to help young people. As the father of a son with autism myself, I applaud what Evernham is doing. Already, there have been some huge charity sales at Barrett-Jackson. I’m hoping this one goes through the roof, too.
