INDYCAR: Miller’s Mailbag, 1.5
Always genuine, never lite: It's Miller time. Here's the latest Q&A from SPEED.com's IndyCar guru.
Q: I am still undecided about the new Mark Miles era, but one thing he has said really concerns me. He seems to have no interest in hearing anything related to the past. While I am well aware that simply digging out the CART rule book from 1995 and saying, here, let’s just go back to this, won't fix everything overnight, we can’t just discount history-both good and bad. Let’s not forget; "those who do not learn from the past are destined to repeat it".
Paul Haluska
RM: I want to give Miles the benefit of the doubt on that statement since I didn’t hear the whole conversation but, obviously, one of the things Bernard tried to do was embrace Indy’s past and try to link it with the present. Will bringing back doubleheaders from the ‘70s be good? Have to wait and see but things like doubleheaders, qualifying races, etc. are certainly worth a shot when nobody is watching your races.
Q: Best wishes for IndyCar participants, track owners, and fans in 2013, in particular hoping the New Year brings the following:
1)Michael Andretti: you won the title, saved a race or two, & salvaged the career of a stout-hearted racer, so for you I hope 2013 brings a well-deserved and permanent smile. No more being the Eeyore of IndyCar!
2) Mario Andretti: a front-line ride in the Daytona 24 Hours with Michael, Marco, and maybe Jeff.
3) Sarah Fisher: a top 3 in the Indy 500.
4) Will Power: what else? A championship.
5) Team Penske: a return to the flawless racecraft of the old days. More specifically, at the first Birmingham Indy race, Will Power was dominant, but poor pitting strategy cost him the race. Ultimately, those points cost him the title. Ditto for Sears Point (I don't care what it's currently called!) in 2012.
6) Al Unser, Jr. peace, tranquility, and solace in realizing that you had a great career and still have a lot of fans.
7) Tony K: a LOOOOONG overdue sip of milk at Indianapolis.
8) Alex Zanardi: a grand marshal appointment at a big race and a hero's welcome when you arrive there.
9) Jimmy Vasser: a team owner win ... anywhere.
10) Ryan Briscoe: One or two "I told you so" wins in 2013.
11) Rubens Barrichello: a guest spot at the 500 with a top shelf team like Penske, Ganassi, or Andretti Autosport.
12) All of IndyCar: a redesign of the rear of the current car, so that it doesn't continue to resemble a beautiful buxom woman with 50 inch hips.
13) All of IndyCar: a huge name driver from elsewhere who comes in and does an entire season or two ... sort of a Nigel Mansell for the new millennium.
14) All of IndyCar: more reverence for the past. How about a former driver in one of his vintage cars driving the 2 or 3 pace car laps just before the start of each race. Can you imagine JR pacing one of the Texas races in the yellow submarine? Rocket Rick at the 500? Al Jr at Long Beach? All-time great Dan Gurney at Sears Point? C'mon guys; get creative!
15) Robin Miller; a lucrative TV spot and - finally - an apology from AJ!
David Lind Alexandria, Louisiana
RM: A good way to ring in the New Year (except A.J. doesn’t owe me an apology; it was only a glancing blow and we shook hands 30 years ago).
