The disappearance of the Super Aguri cars is nothing new for F1, Hobbs notes. (LAT photo) ยป More Photos

Obviously for the Super Aguri team members, as well as for Mr. Suzuki himself, it really is a horrifying moment when you realize you’re $50m+ in debt to Honda and you really can’t go on any further.

They’ve got 150-200 people working for them, and these will be relatively well-paid technicians, mechanics, designers, aerodynamicists and so forth. These guys have been on a pretty good wedge, and of course suddenly they’re not on a wedge at all. So for them it’s a very serious situation, and it’s one less team in Formula 1, so the rest of the teams won’t be able to assimilate all the people who worked at Super Aguri.

You could sit back and say “that’s life”, and all those clichés, but there have been so many teams who have come and gone. Lotus at one stage, along with Ferrari, were the absolute backbone of racing, then Bruce McLaren got his act together, and when Ron Dennis took it over in the early
’80s, the team became a major player. Frank Williams started off with absolutely nothing, driving around Europe scratching together every penny he could, until he found some money from Saudi Airlines. But even his team at the moment is running a bit ragged compared to McLaren and Ferrari.

Alain Prost came in as a four-time world champion taking over the Ligier team in 1997, and he fell on his face. Super Aguri came in at a time where racing is particularly expensive, and these teams rush all over Europe with five or six transporters, not only to racing but to the testing. Their fuel bills this year will be absolutely horrendous just for the trucks alone, let alone all the private jets.

Super Aguri were taking on a lot, and they were hoping to find some sponsorship outside of Honda, but it never happened. Bernie Ecclestone said the other day that Formula 1 really only needs 10 teams, which I think is a mistake. We could do with a lot more than that.
