Reigning Renault World Series champion Alvaro Parente took a surprising win in his GP2 Series debut at the first race of this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix doubleheader.

Starting from the outside pole, Parente jumped to the lead after polesitter Pastor Maldonado stalled at the start, and led every lap en route to the checkered flag. Bruno Senna finished second after starting fourth – he overtook Andi Zuber in the pits, and the Spaniard completed the podium.

The beginning of the race was tumultuous, and the safety car was deployed after a Turn 1 pileup triggered by Christian Bakkerud, who spun Ben
Halney’s car. In the confusion, Roldan Rodriguez went flying over Ho-Pin Tung’s car.

At the restart on lap seven, Senna made an attempt at passing Parente for the lead but the Portuguese defended his position. The Brazilian hounded the Super Nova driver for the entire duration of the race, but could never again mount a proper attack and crossed the finish line 0.5sec behind.

Giorgio Pantano was fourth, while GP2 Asia champion Romain Grosjean posted a strong drive through the field to finish fifth after starting 11th. Vitaly Petrov, Sebastien Buemi and Kamui Kobayashi rounded out the point scorers.
