McLaren has finally confirmed that Lewis Hamilton will partner Fernando Alonso next season, ending months of speculation about the British youngster's prospects.
The only real question was whether Ron Dennis preferred to give him a year of testing rather than throw him straight in against a double World Champion, and in the end he has decided that the latter option was a risk worth taking.
Ron's hand was in effect forced by the deadline of the first winter test at Barcelona next week. If he was going to take Lewis he had to ensure that he got as much running as possible, as there are only three group tests before Christmas.
Pedro de la Rosa now reverts to the role of test driver, while having failed to land a job elsewhere Gary Paffett will remain second test driver, although under the new rules he is unlikely to get much running.
Hamilton, who turns 22 on January 7, has won in every category he has competed in, having been guided by Dennis since he was a kid.
"It's a dream come true," said Lewis. "To be racing in Formula 1 with McLaren has been the ultimate goal for me since I was very young and this
A delighted Dennis said: "Since 1998 Lewis has formed an important part of our long-term strategy and we are pleased that we are able to help him take another step and achieve his dream of becoming a Formula 1 racing driver. Pedro has done an outstanding job for us this season but we felt it was the right time to provide Lewis with this opportunity. It's obviously going to be the biggest challenge of Lewis's career so far but it's one that we are sure he will be able to meet. He is coming into the paddock for the first time as a Formula 1 racing driver and will have to familiarize himself with the pressures of a Grand Prix weekend. However the confidence we have in Lewis's abilities and talent is clear from our decision to give him the chance."
