Felipe Massa knows nothing but the top of the timesheets ever since his win from pole in the Brazilian Grand Prix a month and a half ago, as the Ferrari man, who topped the charts in the two days of Barcelona testing he took part in last week, again led the Formula 1 field as activities resumed at the Jerez de la Frontera circuit also in Spain today.

Massa's best lap of 1:19.462 was 0.2s quicker than teammate Luca Badoer and 0.8s ahead of the first non-Ferrari man, McLaren rookie Lewis Hamilton. New Honda tester Christian Klien was fourth, while Franck Montagny rounded out the top-five for Toyota.

Montagny was joined by Japan's Kohei Hirate, a Toyota development driver who made his F1 debut at Jerez today. Hirate, who took one win in his Formula 3 Euroseries campaign this season and is widely regarded as the most promising Japanese driver since Takuma Sato, is signed to drive for Trident Racing in GP2 next year. His best mark was a 1:21.424, good for 15th in the 17-car field.

And amidst the customer-car controversy to be possibly sorted out this Friday (click here for story), Super Aguri's Anthony Davidson made sure the debate will be heated by placing SA's interim car
