F1: Williams Should Be Better Than in France, Says Michael

Williams technical director Sam Michael says he hopes that the team can perform better at Silverstone than it did at Magny-Cours – but admits the similarities between the tracks does not bode well for an improved performance.

Nico Rosberg had a 10-place grid penalty in France, but even without that was only 15th fastest in qualifying. He finished well down the field. Williams has had a huge amount of success at Silverstone in the past, but failed to win there in the BMW era. Its last success was with Jacques Villeneuve in 1997.

“We want to make sure we qualify a lot better than we did in Magny-Cours,” Michael told SPEEDtv.com. “Silverstone’s a lot like Magny-Cours in that you’ve got to qualify
well, because it’s very difficult to overtake round here, and that dictates your strategy quite a lot. You get a lot of field spread because of the high speed corners.

“We haven’t won a race here for a long time, but we haven’t been competitive for a long time either. We’ll concentrate on just improving the car. I think Magny-Cours and Silverstone are probably our two weakest tracks, it doesn’t mean that we’re not coming here and not trying to get the best out of it.”
