Williams has sent a message of condolence to Venezuela after the death of the country’s president Hugo Chavez.

Pastor Maldonado’s PDVSA backing was personally approved by Chavez, who lost a long battle with cancer on Tuesday. His death has inevitably led to speculation that the country’s support of Maldonado could now be under threat.

Meanwhile, a simple statement from the team today read: “In the wake of yesterday's announcement that Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías, President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, has passed away after a long battle with cancer, the Williams F1 Team sends its deepest condolences to the family of President Chávez and the people of Venezuela.”
