Vitaly Petrov was one of the unsung heroes of the Belgian GP, the Russian moving up from 23rd on the grid after his qualifying crash to ninth at the flag.

He should have finished in front of the two Mercedes, but while he stopped for a new set of slicks long before the late rain shower, they both stayed out and completed the race with a single stop.

“I did a not too bad start and then I tried to keep pushing harder, tried to pass Rosberg, which it what I did,” said Petrov. “We need to analyze why we did an extra pit stop, because without this, we could have finished in front of the Mercedes.

“But the race was nice. Conditions were very difficult, and to choose the tires was hard.

“Of course it was a pity from yesterday, again I apologize to the team for a stupid mistake, but today I was always in the top 10 and I hope next time I qualify a lot better and I don’t need to pass so many cars.

Petrov said he was happy with the boost from the F-duct: “You can see our car is very good on the straights.”
