George: race has to make financial sense for IMS. (LAT Photo) ยป More Photos
Indianapolis Motor Speedway owner Tony George played down speculation that Formula 1’s return to IMS is imminent, claiming again that the circuit won’t bring the USGP back unless it makes financial sense.
Given the high fees commanded by F1 commercial boss Bernie Ecclestone, that equation would mean finding a title sponsor for the event.
"It really all depends on finding the right sponsor partners for Formula 1 to come back," George told Indianapolis’ 1070 The Fan Radio. "We need to improve the financial performance of the event in order to justify bringing it back.
"We won't do that without sponsorship,” he added. “So we're talking to some folks that may have interest, and that could happen as early as 2009 if we can go to Bernie with a proposal."
The USGP at Indy was dropped from the World Championship calendar last July. A MotoGP event will run on a revised version of the IMS road course on Sept. 14.
Zak Brown, founder and CEO of Just Marketing International, which has been given the task of finding a title sponsor for the USGP by Tony George, will be a featured guest on Wind Tunnel with Dave Despain this Sunday on SPEED at 9 p.m. ET.
