BMW Sauber boss Mario Theissen says that he’s particularly encouraged by the F1.08’s reliability through the first four races.

The team’s only retirement to date came when Kubica was hit by Kazuki Nakajima in Australia, and there have been no mechanical failures in races.

In addition the starts – which proved so expensive for Kubica – worked well in Spain. The Pole did lose a place to Lewis Hamilton on the run to Turn One, but his initial getaway was OK.

“Performance was good, and relability was good,” Theissen told SPEEDtv.com. “We haven’t had any issues in the first four races, and for the first time a gearbox has completed four races, which is
a really good result.

“The starts were also good. Just after the start Robert got a bit too much wheelspin, and but the starts themselves were good with both cars.”

However Theissen has joined the chorus of people calling for a change in the safety car rules after Nick Heidfeld suffered a stop and go penalty when he had to refuel when the pit lane was closed. He eventually finished ninth.

“Position was depending on the safety car. That’s not motorsport, it’s a lottery. We should get rid of this. This time it hit Nick, and several other drivers were affected already. I know the team managers and the FIA were talking already about how to modify the rule.”
