Adrian Sutil led the way for Force India in the first free practice of 2010 in Bahrain Friday.

Sutil bested Fernando Alonso in a Ferrari by less than 2 one hundreds of a second with a 1:56.583 to Alonso’s 1:56.766, confirming that the competition in 2010 will be tight. Overall the top 13 were separated by less than a second with 13th place Sebastian Vettel at 1:57.943.

It was a Ferrari-McLaren battle for most of the 90 minute session with Robert Kubica in the mix for a time. But it was Sutil who stole the top spot with 25 minutes left in the session.

Felipe Massa was fourth behind Kubica in the second Ferrari, with McLaren teammates Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton in the fifth and sixth spot.

Vitantonio Liuzzi in the second Force India car was seventh ahead of the Mercedes of Nico Rosberg. Mark Webber in the Red Bull machine was ninth and Michael Schumacher in his first practice since 2006 rounding out the top ten.

The BMW-Sauber team struggled with both their cars down the charts in 17th and 18th.

As for the new teams, Lotus was faster than both Virgin Racing and HRT. Both Lotus machines turned laps with Heikki Kovalainen 19 and Jarno Trulli 20th.

The HRT F1 team which waited until Friday to make their on track debut, passed inspection but only Bruno Senna was able to get on track. He wasn’t able to complete a timed lap during the session however, only making three installation laps. Karun Chandhok watched from the garage as the team wasn’t able to get the car ready in time to make run. Lucas di Grassi in the Virgin Racing car also wasn’t able to put down any timed laps as he only did 2 installation circuits.
