1950s Formula One legend Sir Stirling Moss is in intensive care after a three-story fall at his home in London.

The 80-year-old Briton, who won 16 Grands Prix, has broken ankles, feet and vertebrae damage but the injuries are not considered life-threatening.

The Daily Mail newspaper reported that, that an elevator in his house malfunctioned and stayed at the fourth floor. Moss stepped into the shaft on the third floor and fell to the concrete base.

"Amazingly he did not suffer any internal injuries," confirmed British Racing Drivers' Club secretary Stuart Pringle, who said Moss has been operated on.

"Lady (Susan) Moss has just telephoned me and although Sir Stirling is not in good shape, (but) he is no longer in danger," he added.
