Ron Dennis says that the team’s qualifying performance in Turkey is encouraging, but concedes that Ferrari remains ahead for the time being. However he insists that the development the team is pursuing could reverse the situation in the coming weeks.

“There’s a lot of races to go,” said Dennis. “Obviously if we emerge out of this race closer, then life’s going to be easier than if the opposite applies. All we can do is come to each of the races and do our best. These last races the cars haven’t been back to the company. Everyone’s moving their cars [from Barcelona to Turkey] and handling them at long range, and that hampers development.

“And really big steps only take place when you go testing as always. The next test will carry a lot of modifications into it, and close the gap or move ahead. You’re not shooting at a stationary target. Ferrari is trying to stay ahead and we’re trying to catch them up. We know what it’s like to be the other way ’round, and that’s why we develop the car so aggressively. There’s a long way to go yet.

“We have a lot of resources, and as you can imagine we’re pushing very aggressively to make the car more competitive. That’s F1. Whether we can be the dominant force in some parts of the season remains to be seen.”
