Tonio Liuzzi says that Sebastian Vettel made a “stupid move” when the Red Bull driver suffered a rear puncture on the Force India driver’s nose at Spa.

The contact happened after Vettel dived past Liuzzi at the chicane. The Italian jumped straight into the pits for a new nose, but the incident put Vettel out of contention for points, as he had to do a full lap with a rear puncture. From being 11th and around 48 seconds behind the leader he went a lap down.

“When he was behind me he was trying left and right,” Liuzzi told speed.com. “But on the long straights we were faster, so it’s difficult to overtake us. Once he braked really late. I just went pretty straight, and when I did the corner he went wide because he wanted to be pretty sure I was not coming back into the left corner. There was no need to do it, because I already gave him the corner.

“He just did a move for no reason, he was already going right and he went a bit wider, and he touched my nose. I think it was a stupid move from him and he didn’t need to do it, because he was anyway maybe two seconds faster a lap.”

Towards the end of the race Liuzzi found himself behind Jaime Alguersuari, but an attempt to get past ended when the Spaniard cut the chicane with two laps to go. He later got a penalty for gaining an advantage, so Liuzzi picked up 10th place, although without the nose change he could have been as high as eighth.

“Alguersuari cut the chicane and gained two seconds out of me. I think it was quite clear. We were really strong on the straight and when I overtook him he just carried straight over and gained a lot of time.”
