Nico Rosberg said after he was teamed with seven time world champion Michael Schumacher at Mercedes that he would not be upstaged and he seemed to prove that Friday by leading the second practice session at Bahrain.

Rosberg put down a fast lap of 1:55.409 early in the 90 minute session. His teammate Schumacher was third with Lewis Hamilton in the McLaren sandwiched between in second. Jenson Button was fourth in the second McLaren with Sebastian Vettel fifth for Red Bull.

“We improved the car over the course of the day but it didn’t feel great initially with the new track,” Rosberg said. “Lower down force and the conditions were very sandy this morning. So we had a few balance issues to work on but it came together very well this afternoon. There are areas where we can still improve but we have a good comparison with the tire compounds and on the long runs. Overall we learned a great deal today so it’s a positive start to the weekend.”

Mid way through the session, Vettel suffered some overheating brake problems although he was able to complete the practice, while teammate Mark Webber seemed to have a problem at the rear of the car. Webber was 17th after parking the RB6 after just 12 laps. The team later said that Webber had stopped as a precautionary measure with possible gearbox problems.

Nico Hulkenberg was a surprising sixth with Felipe Massa seventh. Vitaly Petrov was another surprise in the Renault in eighth.

After struggling during the morning practice, BMW-Sauber finally found a bit of speed with Pedro De La Rosa rounding out the top 10. He was followed in 11th by his teammate Kamui Kobayashi.

As they did in the morning session the Lotus team led the newcomers finishing with Heikki Kovalainen in 18th and Jarno Trulli in 19th.

Bruno Senna in the HRT machine was finally able to run laps although he was nearly 12 seconds off the pace and actually lost part of a rear wheel and was forced to stop on track as the session came to a close.

Senna’s teammate Karun Chandhok again had to delay his track debut in the new HRT as the crew continued to try and fix a persistent clutch problem.

Toro Rosso driver Sebastian Buemi also sat out the session with an unknown mechanical problem.
