Davide Valsecchi has hinted he may be next in line for the vacant Lotus race seat in 2013.

The Enstone-based team is believed to be considering whether or not to keep on board the fast but erratic Frenchman Romain Grosjean.

Italian Valsecchi, 25, is the new GP2 champion.

"I don't wish anything bad against Grosjean," he told Autosprint magazine, "but if he's not there then I see myself as the favorite.

"It's perhaps too early to talk about it."

It is believed Lotus was due to make its decision about Grosjean last week, but the board met and decided to wait a little longer.

Valsecchi, who would be the only Italian on the 2013 grid, added: "My goal is to get into Formula One and then prove that I deserved the chance."
