After sitting out on most of the morning practice session with a gearbox problem – and being last on the timesheets then – Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen bounced back by setting the pace on Practice 2 for this weekend’s Turkish Grand Prix.

The Finn’s best lap of 1:27.543 beat McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton by a scant 0.036, with Felipe Massa in the second Ferrari also close, just 0.103 further back. The Red Bull of David Coulthard was an unexpected fourth, ahead of Heikki Kovalainen’s McLaren.

It wasn’t all smiles at the Red Bull pits, however: Mark Webber had a sizeable crash at the session’s 30-minute mark and brought out a red flag. The Australian ended up 19th on the charts.

"Going off the track at Turn 6 was 100 percent my fault," Webber said. "I didn't respect the green astroturf that sits on the outside of the track enough.

"I was a bit too loaded up on the outside of the track, the astroturf was a bit damp, and I went off, it was my fault. I apologize to the guys and we'll bounce back from this tomorrow."
