Peter Sauber says that Sergio Perez has a “good future” in the sport in the light of his second place in Malaysia.

He also said that the second place was in its way more rewarding than Robert Kubica’s Canadian GP win in the BMW era.

“The feeling is fantastic, of course,” Sauber told SPEED.com. “‘Checo’ (Perez) did an incredible race. I was so surprised after the tire change; he was in front with wet tires, with intermediate tires – well not in front, but he drove the fastest lap. And then also with slick tires. He’s young and I think he has a good future.

“Also, the car has to be good, otherwise you can’t do that. But I think we have to stay on the ground – that’s important.”

Asked to compare the Malsaysian result with Kubica’s victory, Sauber said: “Don’t forget in Montreal we were very lucky with this crash between Kimi (Raikkonen) and (Lewis) Hamilton.”

Sauber was also keen to play down suggestions that the relationship that both the team and its driver have with Ferrari had any bearing on Perez’s ultimately unsuccessful chase of Fernando Alonso.

“He has no contact with Ferrari. He is in this (Ferrari) academy, but it’s nothing special," Sauber said. "We needed the result, because behind all our competitors scored points, and it’s very important that we had the result. It was, ‘Be careful, we need the result.’ It’s nothing to do with Alonso in front.”
