Jarno Trulli says that Renault and Red Bull have jumped ahead of his Toyota team over the past two races.

The Italian was fourth in Malaysia, sixth in Bahrain and eighth (after a pit stop mix-up) in Spain, but was out of the points in Turkey, where he lost ground with a first-corner bump.

“It’s getting more and more difficult, because it looks like Red Bull and Renault have made a big step forward,” Trulli told SPEEDtv.com. “While during the first three races we were ahead, now we’re probably slightly behind.

“They are one or two tenths quicker, where before they were one or two tenths slower. So it just shows how tight is this midfield, and how important is the work the team does to develop the car.”

Trulli says that it’s very hard to get into the points this season, and everything has to be right to do so.

“It has always been like that. When you are fighting for one point in the midfield, you really need to put all your best experience and best effort if you
really want to get it. So far this year I never got one thing wrong. Obviously I’m very pleased with the way I’m driving, but if there’s a guy out there who can say he’s unlucky it’s me, in the first race and Spain, it will cost me a lot by the end of the season.

“Nevertheless I keep committed, and I just want to push the team because we’ve got a good car, a good baseline, the team is strong, and we need to push hard.

“I’m trying my best. I don’t want to qualify on the first row like Fernando [Alonso] did in Spain, and finish behind us like he was going to do. It wasn’t cheating, but it was a different interpretation of strategy. We need to build a quicker car in order to fight with the same fuel as the rest of the field in the front.”

Trulli won Monaco from pole with Renault in 2004, but says he doesn’t know what to expect this season: “We’ll see, depending on the car behavior. It will be quite difficult without traction control.”
