Felipe Massa says had no warning about the oil slick that sent him flying into the barriers in morning practice at Silverstone

The Brazilian said he had not been told by his engineer Rob Smedley that Fernando Alonso had stopped with an engine failure. The car was badly damaged by a heavy rear end impact at Stowe corner, where Michael Schumacher suffered a broken leg in 1999.

“I didn’t see anything and Rob didn’t know because there was no message about oil on the track,” said Massa. “I think they didn’t show properly [on the TV] if Alonso was stopping because of the engine or not. So when I arrived the track was clear and I just became the passenger.”

Massa insisted that the accident didn’t really hamper him despite the lack of mileage. He ran only eight laps before the accident, and 18 after it, having missed the start of the second session, or 21 fewer in total than his team mate managed. The team tested for three days at Silverstone last week. He was quickest in the morning session, and eighth in the afternoon.

“To be honest I didn’t lose so much because last week was quite useful in terms of practice for us. I was not supposed to run a lot this morning anyways, and I lost maybe half an hour in the afternoon. So I didn’t
lose so much, I think everything was in a normal direction. The crash didn’t affect also the performance of the car, the car was good enough straight away in the afternoon as well.”

Fourth in the morning, Kimi Raikkonen was only 12th in the afternoon, and admitted he was struggling to find a balance.

“The morning was OK,” said the Finn, “And then we lost somehow a bit, not direction, but suddenly the car wasn’t good any more. So we have some work to do for tomorrow.”

He said he didn’t know whether he would be in the fight for pole: “I don’t know, it depends on many things. For sure there are a lot of different fuel levels and stuff, and definitely we didn’t have a good car in the afternoon. But definitely we can work on that and get it right. We’ll see what we can do tomorrow.”

For Saturday Raikkonen will fit a new engine to replace the one that was heated up by his exhaust in France. Under this year’s rules drivers can have their first change of the year without penalty.
