Mercedes has confirmed that it has purchased a 75.1% share of Brawn GP, and will re-launch it as a full ‘Silver Arrows’ Mercedes works team in 2010. Ross Brawn will retain his role as team principal.

Mercedes has in turn agreed to sell its 40% shareholding in McLaren back to the McLaren Group over the next three years. However, it will continue to supply engines to McLaren.

The Abu Dhabi government-owned group Aabar Investments, which owns 9% of the whole Daimler group, has joined the German company in the purchase. Aabar has financed a 40% shareholding, while Mercedes has bought 25.1% directly.

Mercedes boss Dr Dieter Zetsche announced the news. Zetsche admitted that the relationship with McLaren had been affected by the British team’s focus on its new Automotive division, which is building a car that is a direct rival to Mercedes’ own products.

He insisted that Mercedes expects to reduce its budget to a quarter of the current level in the next two years. He declined to give any information about drivers, although Nico Rosberg is certain to have one seat.

We’ll bring your more details shortly.
