Kovalainen and Mclaren set a more familiar pace on Wednesday (LAT)
Mclaren's Heikki Kovalainen showed that the team cannot be totally discounted in Melbourne by setting their best time of the winter at the Jerez circuit on Wednesday.

The Finn was joined only by Williams' Kazuki Nakajima after Renault and Brawn returned to their bases to prepare for Australia, and Kovalainen completed 72 laps, with a best time of 1m18.202. That compares with Lewis Hamilton's 1m19.121s from Tuesday, which was the best lap turned by the MP4-24 around Jerez to-date. Jenson Button's 1m17.844s in the identically-powered Brawn is the best time set by a 2009 chassis this winter.

Nakajima was nearly 1.8 seconds away from Kovalainen, lapping in a best of 1m20.014s, although completing 103 laps along the way.

Thursday is the final day of testing before the Australian Grand Prix on March 27-29.
