Felipe Massa was undergoing surgery at Budapest's AEK hospital on Saturday night following his frightening qualifying accident at the Hungaroring, the Ferrari team has revealed.

The 28-year-old Brazilian was reportedly conscious and stable as he was airlifted by helicopter to the nearby hospital, but telephoto images after he was struck by debris from Rubens Barrichello's car showed a gash below his left eyebrow.

Reports said he was confused and distressed when in the circuit medical center, and had to be tranquilized; information confirmed by his friend and countryman Barrichello.

Ferrari issued a statement Saturday evening:

"After the accident during the qualifying session of the Grand Prix of Hungary , Felipe Massa was airlifted to the AEK hospital in Budapest . Felipe was conscious at the arrival at the hospital and his general conditions remain stable. Following a complete medical examination it emerged that he had suffered a cut on his forehead, a bone damage of his skull and a brain concussion. These conditions need to be operated on after which he will remain under observation in intensive care."

The thoughts of the entire Formula One paddock are with last year's championship runner-up.

"I'm really thinking of Felipe right now as he's a good friend. I hope he's doing ok," said Giancarlo Fisichella.

Earlier Ferrari team boss Stefano Domenicali confirmed to Italian television that Massa will not race on Sunday.
