F1: Massa Tops Practice 1 in Turkey

The first Aguri-less practice session of the season was set to have a new backmarker, but none expected it to be championship points leader Kimi Raikkonen. The Finn suffered with gearbox problems in the opening session of this weekend’s Turkish Grand Prix and completed just three laps to end up 3.4sec off the pace.

On top of the timesheets was Raikkonen’s teammate Felipe Massa, who’ll attempt a third consecutive Turkish GP win this weekend. The Brazilian’s best lap of 1:27.323 was just 0.1sec ahead than McLaren’s Heikki Kovalainen, who proved to have no lingering issues from his heavy Barcelona accident by beating teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Second on the grid in Spain, Fernando Alonso again hinted at a Renault resurgence by posting the fourth-best time. Honda’s Jenson Button surprisingly completed the top-five in a session marred by several drivers spinning and having off-road excursions, courtesy of a damp track and low temperatures. The Briton’s teammate Rubens Barrichello, who will become F1’s most experienced driver ever with 257 GPs this weekend, was eighth.

Force India’s Giancarlo Fisichella, 15th on the timesheets, was handed a three-place grid penalty for the race. The Italian left pit road under a red light during today’s
opening session.
