With an authoritative lap of 1:35.748, Ferrari’s Felipe Massa led the scarlet team’s comeback in qualifying for the Malaysian Grand Prix, with the Scuderia sweeping the front row just six days after a disastrous Australian GP season opener.

The Brazilian showed impressive pace, edging teammate Kimi Raikkonen by nearly half a second and leaving the third fastest, McLaren’s Heikki Kovalainen, almost 0.9sec behind. The Finn outqualified teammate Lewis Hamilton for the first time, as the Briton had to settle for fourth in Q3, albeit just 0.096 behind Kovalainen.

"Definitely the championship is starting now because what happened in the last race was incredible, we didn't expect that," Massa said. "We did a very good job during the winter and coming to the first race we didn't expect the problems we had, but hopefully we now can put that behind us."

Toyota’s Jarno Trulli rounded out the top-five at the Sepang circuit, in a promising session for the Japanese team as teammate Timo Glock also made it into Q3. The German had an off in his first flying lap, however, and ended up on P10.

Both BMWs also made their usual Q3 appearances, but after Robert Kubica’s front row in Australia, the white cars were somewhat disappointing with the Pole leading teammate Nick Heidfeld in positions six and seven. Red Bull’s Mark Webber showed another of his usually solid qualy performances to post eighth, while Renault’s Fernando Alonso again managed to get into Q3 and will start ninth.

Honda’s Jenson Button led the charge of drivers sidelined in Q2, and will share row six with David Coulthard in the second Red Bull. After a horrific qualy effort in Australia, rookie Nelson Piquet bounced back to post 13th, ahead of countryman Rubens Barrichello in the other Honda, Toro Rosso’s Sebastian Vettel and Williams’ Nico Rosberg, thus far unlikely to repeat his podium performance of Australia.

Giancarlo
Fisichella again came close, but once more failed to get Force India into Q2 – he will start 17th tomorrow. Kazuki Nakajima in the second Williams came next, but will start last thanks to a 10-place grid penalty received for crashing with Kubica in Australia. A brief off in Q1 hurt Sebastien Bourdais’ chances, the Frenchman taking the 19th spot. Force India’s Adrian Sutil, 21st, split the Aguris of Takuma Sato and Anthony Davidson,
