F1: Massa Leads First Day of Monza Test
Kovalainen and Rosberg complete top-three.

Ferrari’s Felipe Massa, winner of the European Grand Prix last weekend, continued to show chart-topping form as Formula 1 testing kicked off this Wednesday in Monza, Italy.

Although the Brazilian focused on long runs, his best lap of 1:23.428 was still enough to best McLaren’s Heikki Kovalainen by 0.011. Williams’ Nico Rosberg was third, one spot ahead of Toro Rosso’s Sebastian Vettel, fresh off a strong sixth-place finish in Valencia. Honda’s Rubens Barrichello completed the top-five.

Vitantanio Liuzzi returned to the cockpit of Force India car and ended up eighth among the day’s 10 runners. Testing continues tomorrow.

The 2008 Formula 1 season resumes with the Belgian GP in Spa on September 7.
