Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has told Felipe Massa he will need to prove himself next year if he is to remain with the Italian Formula One team.
Massa, whose contract runs out at the end of 2012, trails champion Sebastian Vettel by 266 points heading into this season's final race in Brazil this weekend.
In an interview with radio program La Politica nel Pallone, Di Montezemolo says "we expect a great 2012 from him and then we will evaluate what to do. Let's say he is driving for a new deal next season."
Teammate Fernando Alonso is 137 points ahead of Massa and has 10 podium finishes this season.
Di Montezemolo adds "we have a contract until 2016 with Fernando, who remains the best driver in the world in races."
