Heikki Kovalainen has been given the go ahead to race in the Turkish GP after an FIA medical examination in Istanbul on Thursday morning.

The Finn suffered a concussion when he crashed in the Spanish GP, and McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa was on standby in case he was required.

In reality passing the examination was something of a formality. Significantly, Kovalainen had an extra week to recover compared to Robert Kubica, who was not allowed to participate at Indianapolis last year immediately after his crash in Canada.

An FIA statement read: “Following a medical examination this morning by the FIA Medical Delegate, Professor Jean-Charles Piette, and the Chief Medical Officer of the event, Dr. Cem Boneval, Heikki Kovalainen was cleared to race in the 2008 Turkish Grand Prix.”
