Sporting a new “sharkfin” engine cover, British Grand Prix winner Lewis Hamilton topped the charts on the first day of this week’s Formula 1 testing activities at the Hockenheim circuit, hosts of the German GP on July 20.
The Brit posted a best lap of 1:15.483 aboard the revised MP4-23. His nearest chaser was the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen, just 0.020 behind, as the Finn made a point of stressing that the Scuderia isn’t worried about the superiority demonstrated by McLaren at Silverstone last weekend.
"We are looking ahead to the next race and react without panic,” the Finn told Ferrari’s official website. “We know that we have a winning car: we just need a weekend without big problems.
“I'd say that we'll be competitive [at Hockenheim], because the F2008 has demonstrated to be competitive wherever we are. So we can fight back."
Nico Rosberg was third with Williams, another 0.3sec further back. Force India’s Adrian Sutil and Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Bourdais completed the top-five.
Testing continues tomorrow.
