Tipped as the weekend’s early favorite given McLaren’s recent form at the Principality, Lewis Hamilton bounced back after being upstaged by Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen in the morning and topped the charts in the second practice session for this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix.
The Briton stayed atop the sheets for most of the session, being only briefly upstaged by Williams’ Nico Rosberg as the German was among the first to venture out on soft tires. On his own turn with the softs, however, Hamilton regained P1 and stayed there to the end, with a quickest run of 1:15.140.
Fifth in the morning, Rosberg held on to P2, 0.4sec behind. Raikkonen was next, less than 0.04 further back. Felipe Massa in the second Ferrari and Heikki Kovalainen in the other McLaren completed the top-five.
The session was marked by incidents involving both Renaults at the same corner. First, Nelson Piquet spun at St. Devote, lost his rear wing and could not rejoin the session. Then, just 12 minutes later, defending race winner Fernando Alonso went wide at the same corner and clipped the barriers with his left-rear wheel, also damaging his rear wing. The Spaniard was able to drive back to the pits, however.
