Lewis Hamilton says he was happy with McLaren’s form on Friday in Spa, and says that he can challenge the Ferraris for pole.

Last year the red cars had the advantage at Spa, and they have displayed superior straightline speed – a key factor at Spa – all season. However rain in the afternoon meant that the picture is not yet entirely clear.

“It’s been a great day, nice and smooth, no particular problems,” said Hamilton. “It was raining in the last session a little bit, and we just took it easy. I’m not getting my hopes up or anything, but I feel comfortable in the car, and I think we can be strong.

“We’re still playing for a win. I think we’re just as competitive as them [Ferrari]. I think we’re pretty much equal with them, if anything. For sure they have a little more speed at the end of the straight, but it’s not the 8kph or 5kph hat they usually have – it’s only a couple. I don’t think we’ll see as big a difference as we have seen in the past, which will make us a lot quicker.

“I don’t think anyone got much running to really find out what’s going on, but I’m happy where I am. I don’t need to make any changes. If it’s dry tomorrow we have a very competitive car, I think. We definitely have the car to challenge for pole.”

Hamilton says he’s not worried about whether it’s wet or dry for the rest of the weekend.

“I don’t mind, it makes no difference to me... It’s a bit reminiscent of Silverstone and Monaco. Honestly I don’t mind. It’ll be nice is it’s dry, it’s a great challenge, and the car is good in the dry as well. In the wet it’s going to be so tricky for everyone. We’ll just have to wait and see.

“When it’s dry you can push, you can go on curbs, and use every bit of the road, even a bit of the grass. In the wet you have no grip anyways, but if you touch a white line, or you go on a curb, then you’re going to crash. It’s very, very tricky just to know where all the puddles are, because you have aquaplaning.”
