Rome To Be Second Italian Race In 2012, 2013 - Mayor: Rome is still on track to host a round of the World Championship in 2012 or 2013, the Italian capital's mayor revealed on Wednesday. A possible street race in the famous city has been on the cards for some time, but it had been thought that political obstacles had thwarted the plans. But mayor Gianni Alemanno told a morning television program on Rai 1 television on Wednesday: "From 2012 or no later than 2013, a Grand Prix will take place in Rome. This will be the second race for Italy, because the race at Monza is guaranteed." It is believed the city's EUR district has been selected by Hermann Tilke as the site for the race, where the roads are wider than in the inner city. Alemanno continued: "There are problems because we have to reach full agreement with the inhabitants of EUR. We have an agreement at the international level. There are no certainties, but our promise is very solid."

Carmaker Renault Considers Buying Back F1 Team - Report: French carmaker Renault SA is reportedly considering buying back a majority stake in the Formula One team that bears its name. Amid the car sales crisis and economic downturn, and the damaging crashgate scandal, Renault sold a rumored 85 percent of the Enstone based team last year to Luxembourg-based investment firm Genii Capital. With its new owners, Renault F1 has fared better than expected in 2010, culminating in Robert Kubica's strong performance and third podium of the season so far at Spa-Francorchamps last weekend. Finland's Turun Sanomat claims that Renault SA's financial situation has dramatically improved to the point that the carmaker is interested in returning wholeheartedly to F1. The rumor ties in with ongoing speculation, also once again alluded to at Spa by new team boss Eric Boullier, that Kimi Raikkonen could return to F1 next year with Renault.

No Decision On Whitmarsh's FOTA Successor Yet: A decision about Martin Whitmarsh's successor as FOTA chairman has not yet been taken, the McLaren team boss has insisted. At Spa-Francorchamps last weekend, it was reported that Briton Whitmarsh will be replaced as head of the teams' organization by Williams' Adam Parr. The Italian report also said Toro Rosso's Franz Tost will succeed Whitmarsh's current deputy Stefano Domenicali. But a report in the Portuguese language Globe Esporte insists that Whitmarsh's tenure will not end until the end of the year. However, Globo said it is likely that the next FOTA chairman will represent an independent team, meaning that Williams' Parr is a likely candidate. "My mandate runs until the end of the year," Whitmarsh is quoted as saying. "A vote is likely to happen between November and December."

Webber Supports Driver's Crash Injury Recovery: Mark Webber has vowed to support the rehabilitation of injured single seater racer Chris van der Drift. New Zealander van der Drift, 24, broke his ankle, shoulder and two fingers in an horrific crash during the Superleague race at Brands Hatch in July. Next Tuesday, in the days before the Italian GP at Monza, fellow Antipodean Webber will flag off a kart race in Milton Keynes to raise money for van der Drift's specialist treatment. 2010 championship favorite Webber, 33, badly broke his leg in a cycling crash before last season. "It's really humbling to see so many good friends from within the industry support me through this difficult period," said van der Drift in a statement.

Red Bull Strategist Set For Ferrari Switch - Reports: A prominent engineer could be set to switch from Red Bull to Ferrari, according to rumors in Italy. Neil Martin, currently chief strategist at the energy drink owned team and with years of previous experience with McLaren, is eyeing a similar role with F1's famous Italian outfit, according to the unconfirmed speculation. The reports indicated that Martin's switch might indicate a deeper technical restructuring at Maranello based Ferrari. The rumors may reportedly not be confirmed for several weeks. Pat Fry, who worked alongside Martin at McLaren, also recently moved to Ferrari.

Hakkinen's Son Starts Karting Career In Italy: Mika Hakkinen's nine-year-old son has begun a serious karting foray. Hugo Hakkinen, born at the end of 2000, made his debut recently at a round of the Italian WSK Master Series at Siena. He now races in the series' Mini class, open to youngsters between nine and 12, wearing a white helmet with the light blue Finnish cross. Two-time World Champion Hakkinen, 41, attended the event with his new partner. "Hugo is making good progress, but it takes a little bit of time to develop," said the Finn. "We chose Italy to start off Hugo's karting, and I'm really happy with the choice."
