The FIA has indicated that it means business on the issue of introducing a common engine and gearbox as early as 2010 by announcing the start of a tender process for the common parts. Under this process, a shortlist of possible contractors is drawn up and each is invited to submit a cost proposal. The contract is then awarded to the best tender, usually, but not always, the lowest priced. Team bosses were surprised by the news, which came out at the end of free practice in China.

An FIA statement said: “The FIA will today open the tender process for the appointment of a third party supplier of engines and transmission systems to be used by competitors in the 2010, 2011 and 2012 FIA Formula 1 World Championship. The tender summary and requirements will be published on the FIA website shortly.”

Mosley’s suggestion that a common drivetrain should be adopted was greeted with surprise and frustration by team bosses when it first emerged last week, since proving their own technology is a major reason why they are in the sport.

However Mosley insists that dramatic efforts need to be made to cut costs, given the current economic climate.
