Ferrari is struggling to get the best out of new tires at Monaco, according to Kimi Raikkonen. That could prove to be a major handicap in qualifying, although everything it might be academic if there is rain on Saturday, as most forecasts suggest.

Raikkonen finished the Thursday afternoon session in third place, some 0.4sec down on Lewis Hamilton. He found that the loss of traction control made little difference.

“It’s almost the same as it was any other year,” said the Finn. “In the morning it was good, and the first run with he used tires in the afternoon was good, but it was a bit difficult to get the new tires working. Hopefully we found a solution. Apart from that, the car was working very well.
’Both tires [option and prime] were pretty similar when we put new tires on, but the problem was we couldn’t get them working very well. The used tires were working well, and then new tires not. I’m pretty sure that once we’ve found the solution to get the first lap out of the tires we should be fine.”

Raikkonen admitted it was hard to know how the team compared with McLaren: “I don’t know how much fuel they’re running, it’s always a guess. But if you look at the morning and the fist run on used tires, we could have gone much faster than that, but there were some yellow flags and stuff.

“We’ll still pretty quick, even now we’re not exactly how happy how we’re getting the tires working
on the first lap. We know that if we get them working we can be much stronger.”

Teammate Felipe Massa agreed it was impossible to gauge yet how the red cars match up with their primary rivals here. Massa was fourth on Thursday afternoon, behind Hamilton, Williams’ Nico Rosberg and Raikkonen.

“I think it was all right,” said Massa of his performance. “For sure McLaren are very strong, but we need to see if it is really representative what they did. We have one McLaren in the front, one a little behind, so it’s also important to analyze everything to see if they are really competitive like that, or if we can be very strong as well.

“It’ll be quite difficult to get pole position, but I think we have a good car. McLaren also, it will be a big battle. But let’s see if we can do a good job.

“We’ve worked a little bit differently on the setup of the car – let’s see if we can achieve for sure much better results than we had in the past.”

Interestingly he admitted that he’d had some advice from Michael Schumacher: “He told me to use the curbs more at the [Swimming Pool] chicane,” Massa said.

The Brazilian says he’s not worried about potential wet conditions.

“It will be tough; it will be difficult if it’s raining. But we need to approach all the conditions that we are going to see on the Saturday or the Sunday.”
