Fernando Alonso still hasn't won a Grand Prix in 2011. That may be about to change.
The two-time F1 champion paced Friday's second practice in Montreal, showing the way with a lap of 1:15:107 in his Ferrari.
Reigning champion Sebastian Vettel, back after a P1 crash earlier in the day, recovered nicely to run second best (1:15:476) in the Red Bull RB7.
Ferrari's Felipe Massa and McLaren teammates Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button filled out the top five.
While Alonso and fellow frontrunners flourished in P2, others found the going not nearly as fun.
Such was certainly true of team Sauber, which suffered a setback before the session ever started when rookie Sergio Perez, still just not feeling 100 percent from his Monaco crash, opted to sit out. The team hurriedly replaced Perez with McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa but the Spaniard was just 18th on the time sheet.
Meanwhile, the other Sauber — Kamui Kobayashi — also endured a less-than-ideal outing. The Japan native crashed into the Turn 4 wall, triggering a red flag.
Virgin driver Jerome d'Ambrosio later spun into the barrier at the exact same spot where Kobayashi crashed.
The session claimed yet another casualty in Adrian Sutil, who clipped the wall and damaged the suspension of his Force India car.
On-track proceedings pick back up in Canada with a final one-hour practice scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. ET.
SPEED.com will carry live streaming of the entire session.
