In an interesting and somewhat unprecedented manner, Circuit of the Americas has teamed with Phunware to create a fan experience application for mobile users. The intent is to increase the fan experience and provide an interesting app just as Phunware does for NASCAR.
The NASCAR app is free for Sprint mobile users, and includes features such as:
• Live in-car audio for all 43 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers
• Live race radio broadcast for all NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and Nationwide Series races
• Real-time leaderboards and points
• Real-time Pit Pass telemetry data
• Live NASCAR on SPEED broadcasts including live practice and qualifying plus favorite shows like NASCAR RaceDay
• Customizable driver and race alerts
• Live post-race driver interviews
• Race video highlights on race day
• Miss Sprint Cup behind-the-scenes
• Driver, crew and insider tweets
• Breaking news and expert analysis
• Stats, standings and schedules
• Fantasy news, stats and videos
Certainly the COTA app will be a bespoke product offering features that are tailored to the circuit and events held there.
“Phunware is a leader in the industry for creating amazing branded mobile experiences,” said Geoff Moore, chief marketing and revenue officer for Circuit of the Americas. “We look forward to working with them in our continued effort to bring fans the ultimate race experience leading up to the 2012 Formula One United States Grand Prix.”
Phunware has created applications for many industries, and received awards for its work. The group is excited about the opportunity:
“We are extremely excited for the opportunity to bring Circuit of the Americas and the Formula One United States Grand Prix to life through the Circuit’s mobile application,” said Alan S. Knitowski, chairman and CEO for Phunware. “Circuit of the Americas will be a world-class venue providing an unparalleled race experience in the United States and our aim is to create an application that complements and enhances the fan experience.”
So what will the new COTA app offer? How about a 3-D interactive map and virtual tour of the venue, a guide to Austin with area information and news, as well as alerts and videos highlighting activities throughout race weekend.
Austin Becomes Global Focus As COTA Ramps Up
The 2012 United States Grand Prix, along with the SXSW conference, are two of Austin’s biggest draws for visitors from around the world. In a recent meeting held in London with several politicians and diplomats, including the office of the London mayor, the honorable Boris Johnson and Austin mayor Lee Leffingwell, these two events were the key topics of discussion.
“Austin continues to be recognized around the world for its leadership and innovation in the technology industry,” said Gray Hancock, Head of Trade and Investment for the British Consulate-General in Houston. “The upcoming Grand Prix is just one more example of Austin’s growing importance on the global stage.”
In addition to general excitement for race weekend, Leffingwell and representatives from the City of London reviewed the possibility of a direct flight between Austin and London to support the Formula One teams as well as travelers to the event. The creation of such a nonstop flight could result in accelerating a permanent route, one of the many benefits on the horizon as a result of Formula One returning to the United States.
“Austin is making tremendous strides as a destination city and world-renowned center for technology,” said Leffingwell. “I look forward to the inaugural Formula One United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas and to downloading the app to go with it.”
That’s good news, as well. Make it easy for the world to travel to Austin. I have immense respect for the journalists who attend all the races, and reading their tweets, you get the full understanding of why they deserve hazard pay just trying to get to a circuit. If Austin can make its event travel-easier, that’s better for fans and pundits alike.
