Jenson Button was frustrated by a problem with his car made it feel strange and left him stranded in eighth for his first race for McLaren after Saturday’s qualifying.

Button is four places behind team mate Lewis Hamilton.

“I’m surprised I’m eighth on the grid with that issue, because it was a very slow lap at the end,” he said. “It’s not too bad in one way, but if you look at Lewis’s time he’s up in P4, which looks good, but you’ve got to look at the time difference from first to fourth, it’s massive, it’s over a second. That’s very surprising, I don’t know where that’s come from.”

Button says he just has to see what the race brings.

“We’ve got to fill it up and see what happens from there. Your strategy isn’t decided on a Saturday any more, you’ve got to see what other people are doing in the race. We’ll see what’s going on. I’m looking forward to the challenge, it’s going to be very different from what we’re used to.

“I would love to be scoring big points. It’s still a possibility, but we haven’t made it easy by starting so far back. I think we can still have a great race tomorrow. It’s going to be an interesting one, because there are so many different strategies and different ideas, any one of us could have a good result.

“There’s a lot of heavy cars going down to turn one, I’ll pick a nice line and hopefully we’ll get through cleanly...”
