Toro Rosso
The gap between the Red Bull and Toro Rosso teams looked bigger than ever at Silverstone as the Italian team continued to suffer from its lack of aero developments. Sebastian Bourdais was 17th in qualifying, while Sebastien Buemi was 20th and last for his first British GP. The two cars ran together near the back of the field in the first stint but any hopes the Frenchman had of making progress were ended when he collided with Heikki Kovalainen, which led to retirement after his 37th lap. Buemi had a low-key run to 18th and last.

RBR
Sebastian Vettel signalled his intentions by topping both Friday practice sessions, and it was no surprise when he took his second consecutive pole. Mark Webber’s lap was spoiled by Kimi Raikkonen and he had to settle for third. That proved to be crucial as in the first stint the Australian was stuck behind Barrichello while Vettel pulled away from the pair of them at a second a lap. Mark jumped up to second by pitting a lap after the Brawn driver, but it was too late for him to do anything about Vettel, who was 15s clear at the flag. No doubt ticket sales for the German GP have had a bit of a boost...

Williams
On the 30th anniversary of the team’s first win Williams had a very respectable performance. Kazuki Nakajima was an excellent fifth in qualifying, although fuel weight accounted for the fact that Nico Rosberg was two places behind in seventh. Nakajima passed Trulli and ran fourth in the first stint but his early stop cost him dear and after getting stuck in traffic and falling off the pace he tumbled down to 11th. Rosberg moved up nicely to fifth by the final stint, and had he not lost time behind Barrichello at one stage he could have been fourth. Encouragingly however he set third fastest lap, behind the RBR cars.

Force India
Some new aero upgrades gave Force India a real boost, and with Sutil third fastest on Friday afternoon there was a good chance that both men would make Q2. Alas brake failure caused Adrian to crash heavily, and the red flag also spoiled Fisichella’s last lap. The Italian started 16th and after passing several cars in the first couple of laps (and surviving a collision that damaged a wheel) he finished an excellent 10th, helped by the fact that the slow Heidfeld held up everyone else in the first stint. Adrian was 18th fastest but had to start a rebuilt spare car from the pitlane. From there it was always going to be tough, and he finished 17th, albeit just behind his old pal Lewis Hamilton.

Brawn
Brawn’s winning streak ended as RBR had a clear edge and Jenson Button struggled throughout to get the car working to his satisfaction in the cool conditions, complaining all weekend of high speed understeer. Rubens Barrichello was happier, and having qualified second retained that position for the first stint before being jumped by Webber at the first stops. Thereafter he fell ever further back from the blue cars up ahead. Button meanwhile started sixth and then dropped to ninth after being boxed in at the start. He soon passed Massa and then spent a long time trying to get by Trulli. He finished where he had started, in sixth place.
