New Renault F1 team Principal Eric Boullier says he was satisfied with the team’s performance in Bahrain, even though both drivers were out of luck on race day.

Robert Kubica made it to Q3 only to tangle with Adrian Sutil on the first lap, while rookie Vitaly Petrov was running well in midfield until he suffered a suspension breakage.

“A lot of things happened,” Boullier told SPEEDtv.com “It was frustrating and a bit disappointing, having Robert off at the first corner, and Vitaly having a great start and good race pace, and then a suspension problem. His pace was good, he was catching Barrichello and pulling away from Kobayashi. We couldn’t have better expectations for him.”

Boullier says that the team’s form is going in the right direction.

“I think so. Definitely the team performance was a huge step from last year. We’ve closed the gap with the big teams, let’s say. It’s encouraging, but frustrating again because we couldn’t do a perfect lap. But this is racing.

“We need a little bit of effort – I mean a huge effort – to keep improving the car and keep developing the car and find a little more performance. At least then we’ll have a bit more margin to make sure we qualify in the top 10.”

He says that aim has to be to break into the top eight and get among the top four teams: “This is clearly the target. Robert could have done it in Bahrain.”
