BMW has halted testing of its Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) after one of its mechanics suffered an electric shock this morning at the Jerez circuit in Spain.

The incident comes one week after Red Bull Racing has had to evacuate its factory in Milton Keynes, England, following a fire scare also related to the KERS system.

Today at Jerez, BMW tester Christian Klien was driving a car fitted with the team’s early version of KERS. When the Austrian came back to the pits, the first mechanic to touch the car was flung to the ground
by an electric shock. Although the mechanic escaped with just a small injury to his left hand and a graze on his left arm, the team decided not to run the car again until the reason for the incident could be determined. When no obvious answer was found, the team scrapped the rest of its planned program for the day and will run Klien in a standard F1.08 tomorrow.

The KERS incident comes amid heightened concerns about the safety of the devices, with Red Bull Racing having had to evacuate part of its factory last week after a fire scare when a battery failed.
