Toyota’s Timo Glock had a huge crash in the second qualifying session for the Japanese GP.

Glock went off the road at some 165mph on the gentle right hand curve that leads onto the pit straight and struck the tire wall head-on. The car buried itself in the tyres and bounced back.

A clearly stunned Glock removed the steering wheel and eventually partly pulled himself out of the car and removed his own helmet, but medical officials fitted a neck brace and carefully extricated him from the car. He was able to give a thumbs up sign to fans from the stretcher before being taken to hospital with an apparent leg injury.

Glock had not taken part in wet practice on Friday because of a fever, and thus had to get up to speed on Saturday morning.

Earlier in the same session Toro Rosso’s Jamie Alguersuari created another red flag with a big accident, but the Spaniard escaped unscathed.
