The 2009 Formula One season was filled with excitement, intrigue and drama both on and off the track; in other words a typical season in the world’s most popular motor sport.

The season began with a new set of technical regulations that were the biggest change in 20 years. Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) were introduced as an option and several teams, McLaren, Ferrari, BMW Sauber and Renault, decided to spend millions of dollars for there development hoping to reap the rewards of an extra 80 horsepower for six seconds a lap.

As the sport tried to control costs, testing was banned, the number of engines a team could use were limited to eight and even the cars themselves looked different with larger front wings along with skinner and taller rear wings. Slick tires were brought back and the ‘double-diffuser’ used by some teams had others crying foul.

Brawn GP, newly reborn from Honda lineage, won the constructor’s championship, while their driver, Jenson Button, took the drivers crown. Ferrari struggled, Renault found itself in court and soon without its colorful team boss, while Toyota and BMW bid adieu. By the end of the year, several drivers had found new homes, Brawn GP became Mercedes and Williams taken on a minor shareholder and there were again rumblings of Michael Schumacher returning.
