Things briefly went well, the wheels bouncing across the peaks in a “bam-bam-bam-bam” staccato that was remarkably faster than my previous efforts. Then the car began to yaw.

Inevitably I over-corrected and in a split-second we shot hard to the right, out of the whoops and into a cactus that stood at least eight feet tall! It was a direct hit – on my co-driver’s side window!

As we bounced to a stop, my side of the car was fine but Parsons’ immediate environment was filled with dirt, dust, sand and branches while the majority of the needles seemed to have found poor Joe himself, leaving him looking remarkably like a pin cushion. Before I could open my mouth to express concern for his well-being, never mind apologizing, I noticed that Joe was laughing uproariously. (In retrospect I’m sure he’s experienced much worse alongside Gordon.)

“That was awesome!” he shouted.

Joe is my kind of people and in that single exclamation he pretty well summed up the entire Baja trip. It WAS awesome.
