The Italian GP produced much intrigue, and it was a sign of how quickly fortunes change that the three guys on the podium were all eliminated at the first corner at Spa a week earlier. And in contrast four of the top six finishers in Belgium retired at Monza!

The race saw a great win for Lewis Hamilton, a stunning second for Sergio Perez, and a very handy third for Fernando Alonso. Meanwhile it was a total disaster for Red Bull as the team failed to log any points at all for the first time since Korea 2010.

Here’s how things worked out for the 12 teams:

Red Bull Racing
Having won in Monza in 2011 Red Bull struggled for pace from the start of the weekend. Sebastian Vettel just made it into Q3 and did well to take sixth, which became fifth after Di Resta’s penalty, while Mark Webber was stranded in 11th. Vettel quickly moved past Michael Schumacher for fourth and then came under pressure from Fernando Alonso. He received a drive through penalty for forcing the Ferrari driver off the road but was still heading for sixth when he had an alternator failure at the start of lap 48. Webber inherited the place but spun on his old tires at the exit of Ascari. The team decided to retire the car with two laps to go as he was not going to salvage any points.

McLaren
McLaren and Ferrari vied for top spot from the start of the weekend. In the end McLaren won the battle, Lewis Hamilton taking pole despite insisting it was not a special lap. Jenson Button joined him on the front row in second. Hamilton held onto his advantage at the start and had a faultless afternoon, stopping once on lap 23 and picking up his pace near the end as Perez got closer. Button lost out to Massa at the start but moved into second after his lap 22 pit stop. However he was forced to retire after a fuel system problem struck and cut the engine on lap 33.

Ferrari
Fernando Alonso was quick all weekend, despite losing track time with engine and gearbox problems on Friday. He was fastest in Q1 and Q2 but then had a roll bar problem in Q3 and could not better 10th. Felipe Massa saved the day for the Italian team with a solid third place, and then went one better by getting up to second at the start. The team was hampered by a telemetry failure but Alonso made quick progress and by lap 39 was able to ease past his team mate into second place. However both Ferraris were then caught and passed by the flying Perez, leaving them in third and fourth.
