Early-season Western Regional 250SX Class dominator Eli Tomac came up big to return to the top of the podium on Saturday night in San Diego.

The defending champ was desperately seeking victory after rival Ken Roczen secured two consecutive wins and steal away the points lead heading into this weekend's event. Despite a late push from the surging German, the GEICO Honda runner successfully stopped the bleeding with a surprisingly narrow triumph at the checkered flag.

Tomac moved into second on the opening lap once Heat 2 winner Martin Davalos encountered main event difficulties yet again after looking so strong earlier in the program. The Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki pilot enjoyed a strong start and was eying holeshooter Jason Anderson but crashed in early in his bid. Tomac slinked by unscathed while Roczen was forced to check up just a bit.

At that point Tomac tracked down Rockstar-backed Anderson. He struck on lap 6 of 15 and immediately opened up a decided advantage.

Points leader Roczen minimized the damage, however, working past Anderson two laps later and setting his sights on Tomac. What seemed to be shaping up to be a one-sided affair turned out to be something of a nail-biter as Roczen closed in on Tomac decidedly on the final lap after the Honda man was stymied by a slower rider.

While he came up just a bit short tonight, Roczen still boasts a healthy 17-point advantage with just three rounds remaining.

Race winner Tomac said, "Being 20 points down in the series isn't a good thing, so at this point I just need to go out and win races and we made it happen tonight. It was really awesome… It got a little close there at the end."

"Honestly, I struggled the whole day," Roczen admitted. "I picked it up in the main. I take it like a win. It was a great race for me and I came so close at the finish line. I landed and I was screaming in my helmet because I wanted it so bad."
